New York is full of spectacular viewpoints, but Edge stands out by offering a truly unique experience. Perched atop the Hudson Yards complex, this observation deck invites you to feel the Manhattan wind while standing on a platform suspended in the open sky. Book a time slot and let yourself be amazed by this architectural feat that defies imagination.
Edge is the iconic observation deck of the Hudson Yards complex, the largest private real estate development in American history. Located on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards, Edge opened to the public on March 11, 2020, just days before the pandemic shut down New York. Designed by architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), the building rises to 1,296 feet (395 meters) and the observation deck itself is at 1,100 feet (335 meters), making it the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere.
What sets Edge apart from other New York observation decks is its triangular platform that extends nearly 80 feet (24 meters) beyond the building, suspended in mid-air. This architectural feat offers a unique sensation of floating above Manhattan. The 28-inch thick glass floor allows visitors to look directly down, more than 1,000 feet above the streets of New York. The glass walls angled outward add to this dizzying sensation while providing wind protection.
The Sky Pod elevator that takes visitors to the observation deck covers the 100 floors in just 52 seconds, at a speed of approximately 14 mph (23 km/h). The elevator walls are equipped with LED screens that provide an immersive experience during the ascent.
For thrill seekers, Edge also offers City Climb, the highest building ascent in the Western world. Equipped with a safety harness, participants climb the outside of the building to reach the summit at 1,271 feet (387 meters). This unique experience allows you to lean over the void with an unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline.
The 360-degree panoramic view from Edge encompasses all of New York's iconic landmarks. To the east, you can see the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and Midtown Manhattan in all its splendor. To the south, the view extends to the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center and the Financial District. To the west, the Hudson River and New Jersey coastline stretch to the horizon, while to the north, Central Park forms a distinctive green rectangle amid the forest of skyscrapers.
Edge is at the heart of Hudson Yards, an entirely new neighborhood built on former covered railroad tracks. This complex includes luxury residential buildings, offices, The Shops at Hudson Yards mall, and The Vessel, a honeycomb-shaped architectural structure comprising 154 interconnected staircases. The High Line, the former elevated railway transformed into an urban park, passes right by, offering a pleasant walk before or after visiting the observation deck.
Best time: Sunset time slots are the most popular because you can see Manhattan by day and then lit up at night. Book these "sunset" slots several days in advance. To avoid crowds, opt for weekday mornings.
Weather: The outdoor terrace may be closed in high winds or inclement weather. The climate-controlled indoor space remains accessible at all times. In winter, bring warm clothes as the wind at 1,100 feet can be freezing.
Photos: The glass walls are specially designed to minimize reflections and get great photos. Professional photo services are available on site.
